KATHMADU, JAN 24 - Dr Govinda KC , who had been staging a hunger strike for the past 14 days, broke his hunger strike on Friday after the government assured to address his demands.

A government talks team led by Secretary at Prime Ministers Office Krishna Hari Baskota who held talks with Dr KC last night also reached an agreement this morning with the agitating doctors who halted services in hospitals to express solidarity with Dr KCs strike.

Dr KC broke his fast by drinking the juice offered by a seven-year old patient Alisha Thapa. He apologised to the patients for the inconvenience caused due to the doctors strike.

Dr KC, who health has been deteriorating due to nearly two-week long fast, has been transferred to ICU after he broke his hunger strike .

The government talks panel went to Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) this morning along with other doctors and informed KC about the pact.

According to the agreement reached between the government team and Dr KC, former dean of IoM will be reinstated and new dean will be appointed on the basis of seniority and work experience, policy will be drafted after analysing the present status of the medical colleges to provide affiliations to new medical colleges and the process to develop IoM as an autonomous university will be initiated based on the report submitted by a taskforce formed to conduct study on the same.

The former dean, Prakash Shyami had resigned in December citing his reservation over granting TU affiliations to new colleges.

On Thursday, the government had formed a four-member talks panel headed by Baskota to hold talks with agitating doctors who had halted services in hospitals across the country to express solidarity with Dr KCs hunger strike .

Dr KC resorted to the strike since January 11 after the TU Executive Council appointed Dr Sashi Sharma as the dean of Institute of Medicine (IoM). KC decided to break his hunger strike after the government assured to meet three out of his seven demands.

In an attempt to break Dr KCs fast protest, the Tribhuvan University had sacked newly appointed IoM Dean Dr Sashi Sharma under the government instruction on Wednesday, but he refused to oblige, saying that his demands have not been completely addressed.
